If you’ve ever considered taking measures to make your home more eco-friendly, then there’s no better excuse to ‘go green’ than right now.
The government has recently announced the Green Homes Grant, which could subsidize your home-improvement costs, whilst you’re simultaneously doing your bit to combat climate change.
What is the Green Homes Grant, and how does it work?
The Green Homes Grant is a £2 billion scheme created to promote energy efficiency in England and encourage people to live more sustainably. The grant will allow those who claim, a voucher of up to two-thirds of the total cost of their home improvements, up to the value of £5000 per household. In addition, certain low-income households who receive other benefits may be able to receive 100% of the cost back of their installations, up to the value of £10,000.
To receive these vouchers, households must first show that they will be installing at least one of what the scheme calls ‘primary measures’. These measures include insulation to solid walls or underfloor, as well as low-carbon heating. If you were to have one of these primary measures installed, then you may also be eligible for a further voucher for a ‘secondary measure’. With this list including the fitting of double/triple glazing, or external energy-efficient doors. However, the scheme states that the subsidy for the secondary measure is capped at the value of the subsidy provided for the primary measures.
Who is this eligible for?
This scheme is open to all homeowners in England, as well as social and private landlords, with the government claiming it could save up to £600 in energy bills per household, per year. However, new-build properties which have not yet been completed are not included and crucially, this scheme is only open to homes in England, so if you reside from a different country within the UK, you will not be able to take advantage of this offer. One other thing that must be noted is that this grant is not eligible for those who are looking to have improvements or refurbishment done on already existing eco-friendly measures. The grant is strictly for those who are installing new, energy-efficient systems, in households where there previously weren’t any.
When/How can I do this?
To encourage people to act on this opportunity quickly, the government has set a deadline of the 31st of March 2021 to spend the voucher and to have all of your chosen improvements completed.
