Superfoods which will do us the World of good
The term superfood doesn’t have a set definition. A superfood can just be thought of as a food item packed full of nutrients which is also delicious. Some ‘superfoods’ however, are too exotic or expensive to slot into your daily diet (think goji berries, chia seeds etc!). It is common knowledge that our diets require variety but this need to work in practice so you need to have a bank of ‘superfoods’ which are relatively inexpensive and will work with your daily diet.
First up are berries – all berries are a great source of fibre which will keep your digestive system healthy and ensure you heart and waistline remain healthy. When not in season, try adding frozen berries to your porridge, smoothies or with yoghurt.
Eggs are a fantastic source of protein for vegetarians and will leave you feeling fuller for longer. One egg has around 70 calories and 6g of protein. They also contain lutein which has been shown to help shield your skin from UV damage. Plus, they’re delicious scrambled, poached, fried, boiled or in an omelette!
Broccoli is full of vitamins A, C and K, as well as folate. Vitamin K helps with bone health. Try drizzling the florets with a little balsamic and parmesan before roasting for a delicious, healthy treat.
Tea drinkers, you’re in luck! Studies have shown that drinking tea regularly may reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s, diabetes and some cancers. It also leads to healthier teeth, gums and stronger bones. Tea is rich in flavonoids – a class of antioxidant.
Nuts are high in healthy polyunsaturated fats and magnesium – both of which are vital for heart health. Antioxidant compounds found in nuts can reduce the wear and tear on your body from free radicals, this lowers inflammations which may reduce your cancer risk. Spread nut butter on toast, make a simple trail mix or just enjoy on their own!
There are obviously many other ‘superfoods’ that this blog doesn’t mention (lentils, bananas, yoghurt etc), but these easy-to-eat and easy-to-find option are a good starting point to ensure you diet is as nutrient dense as it can be.
